Energy – My Vision (Detailed Description)
The Flagbearers on Energy (FoE) special seminar series for Presidential Candidates was organised with the main objective to contribute towards the definition of policy frameworks for achieving a crisis-free energy sector in Ghana.
Specific objectives of the series included:
-
providing a platform for each of the presidential flagbearers of the main political parties to present their ideas for energy sector development,
-
creating a forum for lecturers, students and the general public to gain an insight into the plans of presidential flagbearers to establish favourable energy policy frameworks, and
-
documenting the views of presidential flagbearers on energy for easy reference in Ghana, elsewhere in Africa, and the world at large.
The FoE special seminar series was organized on two consecutive Fridays, 11th and 18th April, 2008. The roster of presentations for each of the four flagbearers was as follows:
Dr. Edward Mahama, 11am – 1 pm, Friday, 11th April 2008
PNC Presidential Candidate
Dr. Papa Kwesi Nduom, 4 – 6 pm, Friday, 11th April 2008
CPP Presidential Candidate
John Dramani Mahama, 11am – 1 pm, Friday, 18th April 2008
Running Mate (Representing Prof. John Evans Atta-Mills, NDC Presidential Candidate)
Nana Addo-Dankwa Akufo-Addo, 5 – 7 pm, Friday, 18th April 2008
NPP Presidential Candidate
The topic for each of the flagbearers was “ENERGY - MY VISION”.
Specially invited stakeholders were given the opportunity to ask questions following each Flagbearer’s address/presentation. Some of the stakeholders who participated in the series came from organisations like Ministry of Energy, Energy Commission, Electricity Company of Ghana (ECG) and the Institute for Industrial Research (IRI) of the Council for Scientific and Industrial Research (CSIR), and other interest groups.
Sponsorship for the seminar series was provided by the European Union Energy Initiative’s Partnership Dialogue Facility (EUEI-PDF) alongside sponsors from Ghana, namely, GECAD Ghana Ltd (an energy engineering firm and local representatives of GE-Energy), CAL Bank Ltd and Graphic Communications Group Limited.
The Flagbearers on Energy (FoE) special seminar series was considered a great success for democracy in general and sustainable energy in particular such that other organisations have proceeded to organise similar events for other sectors of the economy in Ghana and some more organisations are also seeking to replicate the series for Presidential Candidates in other countries in Africa.
