Short Course on Petroleum Product Quality Assessment: Standards, Safety & Risk Management

The Brew-Hammond Energy Centre (TBHEC) of the Kwame Nkrumah University of Science and Technology (KNUST), in collaboration with the National Petroleum Authority (NPA) and the Chamber of Oil Marketing Companies (COMAC), is pleased to announce a 3-day intensive, in-person short course on Petroleum Product Quality Assessment. This training program is designed to strengthen technical capacity in petroleum product quality management, safety, and risk assessment within Ghana’s downstream petroleum sector and the broader sub-region.

Course Overview

The short course provides participants with practical and analytical knowledge on petroleum product quality standards, safety requirements, and risk management practices. It combines regulatory perspectives, industry experience, and academic insight to support informed decision-making and compliance in downstream petroleum operations.

Course Objectives

  • To explain the role of petroleum and petroleum products in Ghana’s economy and the global energy landscape
  • To describe the petroleum value chain and identify key stakeholders in Ghana and the sub-region
  • To understand petroleum product quality parameters and their implications for safety, performance, and environmental protection
  • To interpret and apply relevant downstream petroleum standards, policies, and regulations.
  • To conduct petroleum product quality checks, reporting, and data analysis for informed decision-making.
  • To identify fuel hazards and carry out risk assessments for downstream petroleum operations.
  • To recommend best practices for product quality monitoring and safety compliance.

Learning Outcomes

By the end of the course, participants will be able to:

  • Analyze the economic importance of petroleum and petroleum products in Ghana and globally.
  • Map the petroleum value chain and evaluate the roles of key stakeholders.
  • Identify and assess petroleum product quality indicators and their effects on safety, environmental protection, and performance.
  • Interpret downstream petroleum quality standards and apply them to real-world scenarios.
  • Detect fuel adulteration and propose appropriate corrective measures.
  • Apply structured risk assessment methodologies to petroleum product quality management.
  • Perform quality checks competently, including data collection, analysis, and reporting.
  • Recommend strategies for continuous improvement and adoption of best practices aligned with emerging global energy trends.
