In 2014, the African Energy Commission (AFREC), an organ of the African Union, engaged the Brew-Hammond Energy Centre at the Kwame Nkrumah University of Science and Technology (KNUST) to undertake two key assignments aimed at strengthening renewable energy development across Africa.
The Centre was tasked with developing a manual for solar photovoltaic (PV) based rural electrification in Africa, as well as a manual for the design and installation of small grid-connected wind systems. In addition, the Centre provided specialised training for members of the African Electrotechnical Standardization Commission.
AFREC was highly impressed with the quality of delivery and, in recognition of the Centre’s contribution, awarded it a Certificate of Appreciation.
Archival photographs from December 2014, taken in Nairobi, document moments from this milestone engagement. They feature then Dr. Ramde, now Professor Emmanuel Wendsongre Ramde, the late Mr. Edwin, and two research assistants at the Centre at the time, Emmanuel Osei and Eric Essandoh.
The long-term impact of the collaboration remains evident. Eric Essandoh is currently a Senior Lecturer at the University of Energy and Natural Resources (UENR), while Emmanuel Osei (PhD) serves as a Senior Lecturer and Head of the Energy and Environmental Management Department at Kumasi Technical University.
