Director

The Brew-Hammond Energy Centre in collaboration with the Climate Compatible Growth (CCG) Ghana has commenced its short courses in renewable energy, including Solar PV Design and Installation and Financial Modelling and Analysis of Renewable Energy Projects.

During the opening, the Director of the Centre, Prof. David Ato Quansah, welcomed participants and gave an overview of the Centre, describing it as an interdisciplinary hub that draws expertise from all six colleges of the university. He reflected on Africa’s energy journey, recounting how the continent had faced significant setbacks in meeting global development goals in the energy sector.

The first week featured a course in Solar PV Design and Installation led by Dr. Charles Sekyere, Coordinator of the Short Courses and lecturer at the Department of Mechanical Engineering, together with Mr. Robert Kyere, Chief Technician at the Renewable Solar and Energy Lab.

Dr. Sekyere guided participants through system components such as PV cells and modules, as well as methods of testing and measuring solar module output. Mr. Kyere complemented the training with practical sessions, including battery testing, inverter demonstrations, system wiring, and module output measurements. The practical sessions climaxed with a solar installation exercise at Kubease, giving participants valuable hands-on experience.

At the closing session of the solar class, Prof. Quansah encouraged participants to apply the skills they had gained.

“Build on what you’ve learnt and the skills you’ve acquired. There is a lot that will be thrown at you, but the interest you’ve built should continue to grow. You are now part of the Centre’s family, and you will be engaged in the research that you do. You will be the first point of call in this.”

He also expressed gratitude to the Centre’s industry partners and revealed that the next session will focus on financial modelling for renewable energy projects, urging participants to leverage these opportunities.

Dr. Sekyere also expressed his delight in engaging with the participants. He emphasised the importance of collaboration and networking.

“Some people sat in this training and have empowered themselves and are doing so well. Build the networks and contacts here. We are happy to have you join the family,” he said.
