Mr. Mark Hodgson, a representatives from Startup Discovery School Africa, paid a courtesy call on the Director of the Brew-Hammond Energy Centre (TBHEC) at KNUST, Professor David Ato Quansah, to discuss collaboration opportunities aimed at accelerating energy innovation and low-carbon solutions in Ghana.
Professor Quansah provided an overview of the Centre’s work in research, training, and advisory services across the energy sector. He noted that TBHEC is involved in multidisciplinary energy research, drawing expertise from 11 departments and all six colleges within the university through a dynamic network known as Fellows. This network enables the Centre to work across a broad range of themes in energy and development.
He emphasised TBHEC’s efforts to promote innovation, especially through initiatives like the Energy Innovation Awards and the KNUST Energy Club, which will supports student-led activities in repair, reuse, and renewable energy technologies.
Mr. Hodgson expressed keen interest in supporting local talent, startups, and low-carbon energy solutions. He explored areas for future collaboration, including commercial business models around renewable energy, solar battery systems, and pilot projects that integrate startups into the broader energy value chain.
Professor Joseph Oppong Akowuah, the immediate past Director of the Centre and a Fellow at the Centre, shared his focus on renewable energy and downstream systems to reduce post-harvest losses. He also highlighted ongoing student-led innovations aimed at addressing challenges in rice farming, particularly damage caused by birds.
The meeting sets the tone for a promising partnership between TBHEC and Startup Discovery School Africa to drive impactful, home-grown energy solutions for the future.
