The Brew-Hammond Energy Centre Hosts International Workshop on Renewable Energy in Africa

Researchers from the University of Dar es Salaam; Science, Technology, and Innovation Policy Research Organisation (STIPRO); Danish Institute for International Studies (DIIS); University of Ghana and the Kwame Nkrumah University of Science and Technology (KNUST) participated in a two-day annual workshop at the Lancaster Accra Hotel, from 19-20 March 2025.

The workshop forms part of the DANIDA-funded “Energy Struggles: Renewable Energy in Africa” project, jointly implemented by the partner institutions.

Opening the workshop, Dr. Rasmus Hundsbæk Pedersen, Project Coordinator from the DIIS, provided an overview of the Energy Struggles: Renewable Energy in Africa project. He highlighted the project’s academic progress, noting that out of 11 targeted research articles, five have already been published, while the remaining ten are either undergoing peer review or are in advanced stages of drafting.

Professor David Ato Quansah, Director of The Brew-Hammond Energy Centre, KNUST, recounted Ghana’s energy access efforts and outstanding challenges to the country’s renewable energy transition. He commended the team for the number of articles published and its relevance.

The two-day workshop consisted of rounds of presentations and discussions on research being conducted by researchers on the project, as well as post-doctoral, and doctoral candidates. The team also paid a working visit to Safisana Biogas Plant at Ashaiman, the only grid-connected biogas power plant in Ghana, to learn about the operations of the plant.
