Puresphere Ltd, a Cleantech company is an emission reduction project integrator, and a subsidiary of Bluesphere Ltd and B Pure, based in Isreal. Blue Sphere Corporation is focused on preventing greenhouse emissions while turning waste into revenue generating resources including: energy, composts and carbon credits. The meeting was a collaborated with the Kumasi Metropolitan Assembly (KMA) and JSO Company Ltd. to organise a stakeholders meeting on the upcoming Oti Sanitary Landfill Project and was hosted by the Energy Center, KNUST.
The objective of the Oti Landfill Clean Development Mechanism (CDM) Project is to reduce methane (CH4) emissions, which is emitted into the atmosphere from the bacterial decomposition, volatilization and chemical reaction of solid waste deposited in the landfill. This will be done through the recovery, flaring and economic use of the landfill gas (“LFG”) especially in energy generation.
Methane (CH4), which is one of the 6 greenhouse gases covered by the Kyoto Protocol, forms through the bacterial decomposition, volatilization and chemical reaction of solid waste deposited in the Landfill.
The Landfill which has been operational since 2004 consists of 4 cells and sits on 20 hectares of land. It is scheduled to receive waste through 2020 and then close. By then, it is projected to have 4,500,000 tons of waste. Through the Project activity, methane emissions will be significantly minimised.
The Project will start with the installation of an LFG collection and flaring system. The LFG produced from the waste will be collected through a specially designed system that will feed the gas into a closed flare, which will convert the methane into CO2 and water vapour. Without a proper LFG collection and flare system, the methane will continue to escape into the atmosphere and contribute to the problem of global warming.
Cells 2-4 will be opened by the Kumasi municipality over the course of the project and will be included either through an extension of the existing LFG collection and flare system and/or the introduction of a compost facility. Cell 2 is expected to be opened in 2013.
The Project activity will improve the local environment by mitigating climate change and minimising bad odour and leachate leakage, but will also contribute to the sustainable development of the area by, among other things, creating renewable energy and employment, increasing efficiency and contributing to the technological development of the area and capacity building of stakeholders by encouraging people to initiate other CDM projects.
During the fieldwork, it is expected that the number of gas extraction machines and generators per cell, the capacity of such generators and the total amount of gas to be extracted will be determined through drill and pump and other tests.
