TEC COMPLETES TRAINING PROGRAMMES IN RENEWABLE ENERGY TECHNOLOGIES

Published: 12th June 2013

Continuing its activities in renewable energy capacity development, The Energy Center (TEC) has completed two short courses in Solar Photovoltaics (PV) and Biogas Technologies.

The training programmes were run from 20 – 24 May (for Solar PV) and 27 - 31 May, 2013 (Biogas Technology).

Participants came from various West African countries including Ghana, Niger, The Gambia, Nigeria and Togo.

Opening the training programme, the Acting Director of  TEC, Dr Ahmad Addo emphasized the crucial role of renewable energy in current and future energy systems. He admonished participants to make the most of the opportunity to learn from some of the nation’s finest resource persons in Solar PV and Biogas Technologies.

The first session, (the solar PV training programme) was led by Messrs Isaac Edwin of the Solar Energy Applications Laboratory (SEAL) which is under the Mechanical Engineering Department at KNUST led the first session, which was on Stand-Alone Solar PV Design and Installation. Participants were taken inter alia, through the sizing of Solar PV Systems as well as some practical hands on in the assemblage of the system.

The second session which was on Biogas Technology was led by Dr. Elias Aklaku formerly of the Department of Agricultural Engineering with the support of Dr. Lawrence Darkwah and Dr. Fred Anyemadu also of the Chemical and Civil Engineering Department of KNUST respectively.

The Biogas Technology course was dedicated to introducing participants to what Biogas Technology is all about, its construction, maintenance and so on.

Participant took field trips to sites where they had the opportunity to experience the practical aspect of what they already knew in theory. Places they visited include a biogas plant site under construction at Ejisu Krapa and the biogas plant nearing completion at the Animal Science Department at KNUST.

Participants expressed their appreciation to TEC for organizing the training sessions, and also thanked the instructors for their commitment and dedication. The participants were awarded certificates at the end of each training programme.
