TEC organizes Training Programmes in Renewable Energy Technologies

Published: 15th June 2010

The Energy Center (TEC) has concluded a 2week training programme to develop local and sub-regional capacity in Renewable Energy Technologies (RETs) development and implementation. Course participants came from Ghana, Nigeria and Gabon and were taken through various aspects of system design, installation and maintenance of Stand-Alone and Grid-Connected Solar Photovoltaic applications.

The short courses were organized as part of the Renewable Energy Education Project (REEP) being implemented by the College of Engineering, KNUST and Institut International d'Ingénierie de l'Eau et de l'Environnement (2iE) in Ouagadougou with support from the EU-ACP EDULINK Programme. REEP seeks to help develop local and sub-regional capacity in the development and implementation of Renewable Energy Technologies.

This year’s programme was unique, as the training attracted participants from the local government authorities who desire to harness the potential of RETs for development in their areas of jurisdiction. The Cape Coast Metropolitan Assembly in the Central Region and the Afigya-Kwabre District Assembly in the Ashanti Region all in Ghana sent technical personnel for training.

During the course evaluation, participants expressed their satisfaction with the programme, particularly with the hands-on approach that was adopted, and the wealth of experience the course instructors brought to bear on the training. They suggested that the publicity be intensified for subsequent programmes so that many more people can benefit from the training.

The coordinator of the training programme informed participants that details on the Biogas and Biofuels short courses which were postponed will be published shortly on the website of The Energy Center (energycenter.knust.edu.gh), he also announced that a Master’s Degree Programme by distance learning will soon be mounted and urged the participants to take advantage of it.
