Brief Historical Background of Postgraduate Programmes

The Department of Mechanical Engineering has been running MSc, MPhil and PhD in Mechanical Engineering, with Thermo-fluids and Energy Systems Engineering option since 1990. Since August 2003, the programme has been expanded to cover the other areas of specialization that currently exist in the department, namely Applied Mechanics, and Design and Manufacturing. This expansion of programme has enabled the Department to marginally increase production of high-level professional manpower in these areas for teaching, research and outreach activities in universities, research institutes, and polytechnics. In addition, the programme will continue to provide the urgently needed professionals for the manufacturing industry. The programme is internationally recognised, and many students from outside Ghana have enrolled in the programme.

Since 1998, the Department has been collaborating with the North Carolina Agricultural and Technical State University in Greensboro, USA, in the areas of Applied Mechanics, Design and Manufacturing. The collaboration involves exchange of staff for teaching and research, training of KNUST staff to the PhD level at NC A&T, and exchange of undergraduate and PhD students.

MPhil IN MECHANICAL ENGINEERING

MPhil Programme Specialization Options

MSc students are required to specialise in one of the following options:

  1. Applied Mechanics
  2. Design and Manufacturing
  3. Thermo-fluids and Energy Systems Engineering

Expected output

At the end of the MPhil programme, depending on the area of specialization, the successful participant shall be able to undertake the under-listed activities:

  • Solve engineering problems by analysis and empirical methods, including application of the computer;
  • Apply relevant social science principles to manage engineering organisations and maintain cordial human relations;
  • Provide mechanical engineering consultancy and expert services ;
  • Perform independent intermediate to advance research and feasibility studies that add value and knowledge to science and engineering technology;
  • Work in a team with other engineering and non-engineering disciplines

 

Entry Requirements for Admission of Students unto the MPhil Programme

  1. A student with a first degree in Mechanical Engineering or related disciplines from a recognized university, with a minimum of second class upper division will be admitted unto the master’s programme.
  2. A candidate with a second-class lower division in Mechanical Engineering or related discipline may be admitted.

 

Duration of MPhil Programme

The MPhil programme may be completed within:

  1. two (2) consecutive academic years fr full-time students, and
  2. three (3) consecutive academic years for part-time students.

However, the programme must be completed within four consecutive academic years. Programmes remaining incomplete after the stipulated time are subject to cancellation, revision, and/or heavy fines.

PhD Programme Description

The PhD programme is designed to equip graduates with independent research and tertiary education teaching skills in the domain of Mechanical Engineering. The PhD degree is the highest degree offered, and a PhD graduate is expected to have comprehensive knowledge of his/her field of specialization, and capable of undertaking original research and scholarly work of the highest levels with little or no supervision. 

The PhD programme is highly personalized such that each student will research a topic within the domain of mechanical engineering, which will contribute significantly to the reservoir of knowledge.  To equip graduates with lecturing and students supervision skills, PhD students are required to undertake supervised teaching of undergraduate course(s) and supervise undergraduate project(s).

At the end of the programme, depending on the area of specialization and degree offered, the successful participant shall be able to undertake the under-listed activities:

  1. Solve engineering problems by analysis and empirical methods, including application of the computer.
  2. Apply relevant social science principles to manage engineering organisations and maintain cordial human relations.
  3. Work in government ministries/departments and agencies as experts to assist in policy formulation and implementation;
  4. Provide mechanical engineering consultancy and expert services
  5. Teach in universities and higher institutions of learning
  6. Manage and supervise design, manufacture and assemble of mechanical components and systems,
  7. Control and manage engineering risks and projects. 
  8. Perform independent intermediate to advance research and feasibility studies that add value and knowledge to science and engineering technology.
  9. Able to work in a team with other engineering and non-engineering disciplines.

 

Employment prospects of Graduands

Graduands may be employed by government ministries/departments, power generation and distribution companies, mining companies, engineering and technology departments of universities and polytechnics, consultancy and expert services.

Entry Requirements for Admission unto PhD Programme

  1. A candidate with a good MSc or MPhil degree in Mechanical Engineering or related discipline from a recognized University.
  2. And, a good research proposal with a maximum of one thousand words.

Duration of PhD Programme

The PhD programme may be completed within three (3) consecutive academic years for full-time PhD. However, the PhD programme must be completed within five (5) consecutive academic years, respectively. Programmes remaining incomplete after the stipulated time are subject to cancellation, revision and/or heavy fines.
