Solar PV and Bioenergy/Biogas Short Courses

Published: 29th November 2009

The EDULINK-REEP Short Training Courses, being organised by The Energy Centre, KNUST in collaboration with 2iE, Burkina Faso and CREST of Loughborough University, United Kingdom, starts from the 11th May 2009 to 12th June 2009.

The training courses are geared towards building the technical and management capacities of practicing engineers, policy makers and technicians. The main approach of the training programme will be teaching, hands-on practice in laboratory/workshops, and field trips. The training programme is focused on four specific areas, namely:

ยท         Stand-Alone PV Systems Design and Installation (11th โ€“22nd  May)

The course will provide participants with adequate knowledge and skills in the design, installation, operation, maintenance, and repair of solar PV systems, especially solar home systems (SHS) and solar water pumping facilities. Participants will be introduced to the basics of bookkeeping as well as keeping maintenance and service records.

ยท         Bioenergy Technology and Economics (25th โ€“ 29th May)

This course provides comprehensive information and knowledge on modern bioenergy conversion technologies that are applicable to Africa. It provides all the key elements necessary to support informed decision-making by stakeholders that include project designers, investors, financial institutions and civil society. In addition, the course will deal with issues like feedstock, status of the technologies use in Africa, economics, applications and environmental impacts in relation to modern bioenergy conversion technologies. Conversion Technologies to be considered include Biogas, Gasification, Biodiesel, Bioethanol, and Biomass Cogeneration.

ยท         Biogas Systems Design and Construction (1st โ€“ 5th June)

This is an in-depth training on the design and construction of the various types of Biogas systems. The objective is to provide participants with the knowledge and skills in the design, installation, operation, maintenance, and repair of Biogas systems. This course is geared towards future plant operators, representatives of approval authorities, engineers, technician-engineers, technicians or individuals who wish to specialise in the design, installation, operation and maintenance of Biogas systems. A significant portion of the course involves hands-on practical applications.

ยท        Grid-connected Solar PV Systems Design and Installation (8th โ€“ 12th June)

This course is geared towards engineers and technician-engineers who wish to specialise in the design, installation, operation and maintenance of Grid-connected Solar PV systems. The course will treat the different types and advantages of Grid connected systems. In addition, the course will cover systems with battery back-up, systems without battery back-up, system sizing and economics, metering, legal issues, and practical exercises.
